Reggie White - Defensive Lineman Extraordinaire

Perhaps no player in the history of the NFL struck fear in opposing quarterbacks like Reggie White. He was the most dominating defensive lineman that the NFL has ever seen key. He had a unique skill set that allowed him to not only be powerful but lightning quick as well. Reggie could either and sack him or could speed rush a quarterback and create havoc in the backfield. Over his illustrious career Reggie White compiled 198 sacks with both the Eagles and the Green Bay Packers.

As an equal Reggie White had the unique ability to take over a game from the defensive line position. As a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, he wreaked havoc in the NFL for several years. The Eagles were a threat to win the NFC East for a long period of time simply due to his presence and the other defensive lineman. As a member of the Green Bay Packers key transformed their defense to the point that they were able to win a Super Bowl. On many occasions, I can remember him driving any offense of lineman straight back into a quarterback and then proceeding to sack the quarterback.



Unlike many of the players today who gather large sack statistics, Reggie White was also a brilliant run defender. His size allowed him to plug gaps such that a running back was simply unable to get around him or run through holes on his side of the defensive line. Reggie White played for the University of Tennessee in his college career. In 1983 he was named the SEC defensive player of the year. After college, he went to the USFL and play for the Memphis showboats for two years and recorded 23.5 sacks in the short time frame. He was then signed by the Philadelphia Eagles, who had his rights from the draft two years ago and the rest is history.

Unfortunately, he also found himself in many controversies in his post-NFL career. He made several comments about people that were taken as prejudicial slurs and this has tainted his amazing achievements on the football field. In addition to racial remarks Reggie unfortunately made several comments about gays as well. Reggie White also served as a minister upon his retirement from the NFL. Reggie White passed away in 2004 from cardiac arrhythmia.

Make no mistake about it, as a defensive player Reggie was as good a defensive lineman as the NFL has ever seen. His ability to single-handedly take over a game transformed the way defenses in the NFL are constructed. He is mired by many controversies in his retirement that have tarnished his NFL career.
